Words Can be Very Painful…Words Can Really Hurt…We All Need to Choose Our Words Wisely!

A younger teacher named Bo had been tutoring a weak and struggling student for nearly an entire school year. They had worked together for hour upon hour.  The student really enjoyed spending this time with Bo, as he was someone that the student found it easy to look up to, and also to talk to and to laugh with.  The problem…They were seeing very little progress in terms of improving classroom grades and test scores.

One day, while Bo was waiting for the student to arrive, John (a veteran teacher of many years), came walking into his classroom.  John doesn’t say “Hello,” doesn’t say “Hey, what’s up?  John just blurts out, “What are you doing?  There are tons of kids in this school whom you could tutor and actually make and see positive results.  Why are you wasting hour after hour and day after day tutoring a student who is still not making the grade?   Quit wasting your time and move on to bigger and better things.  What difference does it make?”

The teacher, doing his best to maintain his poise, took a deep breath, stood up, and pointed to the student who had been standing in the doorway the entire time that John was talking…And what he said was very simply, to the point, and so very touching…He said, “What difference does it make Joe?  It makes a big difference to him.”
